The information above about says it all about this book!

I do know how to knit and have knitted quite a bit over the years.  Recently I've been seeing a lot of patterns I would like to try.  However, my knitting skills aren't too great, just the basics for me.

I was thrilled when I was given the opportunity to review The Principles of Knitting.

Oh my!  There are 712 pages in this book.  It's set up into 8 parts: Learning and Methods, Constructing a Fabric, Decorative techniques, Special Fabrics, Stitch and Color Patterns, Pattern Design, Materials, and Working a Project.

The illustrations in the book are countless.  There are both drawn pictures outlining each stitch or pattern as well as photos of actual work.    The only thing I see this book is missing is actual patterns.  However, patterns can be found everywhere, and as long as you have this book for instructions you will be able to work ANY pattern.

I give this book an A++ and highly recommend it.  I plan to gift the book to my middle daughter, who does enjoy knitting, but like me, only know the basic stitching.

Magel's Ghost is the sequel to Magel's Daughter. As I started reading chapter one, I admit to being totally confused....and because of my confusion I didn't know if I wanted to continue reading the book or not. I did continue to read the book, as I do with any book that I have agreed to review. As the chapters unfold, so does parts of what happened in the first book, making things a bit more clear.

This is from the back of the book:
Magel's Ghost,the sequel to Magel's Daughter, continues the story of Karin as she relocated to Minneapolis. Magel has now joined the hallucinatory gathering and continues to harass Karin from beyond the grave.

Hagen, her demented cousin, assists her in the quest for power in the art community. Hagan's role is to dispose of any real or imagined enemies using his expertise as a master butcher and sausage maker. The responsibility of maintaining the purity of the family's Norwegian genealogy rests on Hagan's skills.

The characters caught in Karin's wed, involve the grandfather, gather, and son of a wealthy Minneapolis family. She is at once the ultimate fantasy and lover to all three men. The ripple effect of her destructive psychosis is hilarious.

My review:
I requested to review Magel's Ghost because it was logged as a paranormal romance. I had read one before that was really good.
I guess you could say Magel's Ghost is a romance, but I wouldn't really see it that way. Sure, there is lots of sex in the book. Here I must say that not only is there a lot of sex in the book, it is described explicitly, and most of it I found to be quite disturbing.

The last line of the description from the back of the book talks about Karin's destructive psychosis as hilarious. I didn't find much funny in this book. Sure, I laughed out loud several times while reading it. Then others (my husband and daughter mostly) would ask me what was so funny. I would then have to tell them, but it was always so out there more than funny.

I did read the book to the end. It ends in a way that yet another sequel can easily be born. This is not my type of reading at all. What I mean by that is the explicit sex scenes alone. Without those I found this book to be entertaining and engaging. It made me do a lot of wondering about these Norwegian customs...wondering if by chance they really are true.

I generally don't go into any detail about a book in my reviews as I do not want to spoil the reading for anyone else. This book is no different...besides, I would have no idea where to start! I would suggest that if you enjoy this type of reading, to read Magel's Daughter before Magel's Ghost. Both are listed below for sale on amazon if you are interested.

If you need an attitude adustment about money then The Problem with Money? if the book for you to read. Consise and to the point in just 122 pages.

This was an enjoyable read for me. Sections are short and to the point. Sections are split up among 7 chapters. Starting with chapter 2 there are questions at the end of each short section. You are asked to record them in a journal. There is also a worksheet section in the back of the book for your answers.

Starting in Chapter 3, the author takes you through visualization exercises. It's quite interesting just what you do see when you follow the directions. A real eye opener.

From the back cover of the book: The Problem with Money? It's Not About the Money! guides you through a journey of self-discovery into the beliefs you hold that drive your financial behaviors. And it shows how awareness of these beliefs, and the steps you can take to gain dominion over them, can lead you to much greater control over the money choices.

I recommend this fun and informative read. I read several sections of it out loud to my husband but I do hope he will read the book in it's entirety on his own. It's a real eye-opener to realize just where your money beliefs began, and how to change them.

My thoughts on Here, Home, Hope:
I have really enjoyed reading this book.  You want to keep reading to see what is going to happen in the life of Kelly, her family, and her friends.  It's a regular little "Peyton Place" going on in suburbia.  Kelly has what seems to be the dream life.  She gets to be a stay at home mom while her devoted and loving husband goes to his job as a lawyer each day.  They live in a beautiful house in a beautiful neighborhood.  They have 2 sons who are growing up.

Kelly has a scare with breast cancer and this makes her realize she wants changes in her life.  I love how she uses Post-It notes to remind herself of all the things she wants to change, and how she has these notes stuck all over the house.  She even has them in her vehicle--"Doug".

I'm not going to go in to any other details about the book.  I will say that as you read, you can imagine yourself as Kelly.  The feelings portrayed are real, and heartfelt.

I'm not going to give away the ending---I can't, as I've not finished the book.  I rec'd the book in digital form for review and was confused on how to get it.  Once I got it, it was hard for me to read the digital version over doing other things on my computer.  Oh how I wish I had a reader!  Today is the deadline to review the book.

I look forward to finishing the book in the next few days and finding out just how everything that is going on plays out.  So many lives are involved in the story, and they all revolve around Kelly.  I will update this post once I am done reading the book.

Mailbox Monday 5/23/11

I sure didn't get the volume of mail in this past week that I've gotten the previous 3 weeks.  I switched my hausernet account to our house instead of my mother's address.  This leaves me pretty well starting over with their program.  However, I'm happy that I did get in 2 magazines from them to this address.  The other 3 pieces came to my mom's address, of which they tell me to keep inputting that data as well, and that I will still get paid for it. (If I see an check anytime soon anyway)

Ghost of Spirit Bear Book Review

Ghost of Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen

Recommended for readers ages 11 to 17. Hey, I'm 44, and I really enjoyed it. My 14 year old got right in to it too.

Cole was a violent kid. He beat up Peter, causing permanent brain damage. His punishment was exile to a remote island off of Alaska. Peter was invited to be on the island with his. Yes, the same boy he beat up.

While on the island Cole learns a lot about himself and his heart. Being attacked by a spirit bear his perspective really changes.

Cole and Peter head back to the city after their time on the island. They are met with a high school that is full of violence, bullies, vandals, etc.

Cole and Peter are told to fight from their heart, not their fists. Besides, if they get in to a fight, they will go to jail. One group of 5 boys is especially hard on Peter. Being handicapped due to his beating makes him a prime target.

Together, the boys try to do things as close to how they did them on the island. Things like sitting in a store freezer to clear their minds. They bought used bowling balls and went to an abandoned building to throw them down the stairs.

It was at this building that they ran into an old homeless man. He never realy spoke to him. They were a little afraid of him. Throughout the story, this homeless man pops in to a lot of places where they are, and then disappears. They compare him to the spirit bear, in fact, at one point they see him lay something in the grass before he disappears. When they go to investigate they find it's a small carved statue of a bear.

When things go from bad to worse at their school....Peter gets beat up by a gang in the school bathroom, and one girl that is constantly being called a slut commits suicide.....Cole takes a stand with the principal and tells her that things must change.

She agrees, no longer afraid of losing her job, that the students come first. They put together some things and the students seem to warm up to the ideas. One of the ideas is to change the school mascot from the Raging Bulldogs to The Spirit Bear.

Changing the school mascot becomes a fight for Cole as he has to take on the school board and angry parents. In the end he does get the approval for the change.

Wondering what ever came about with the homeless man? I was wondering too as the book came to an end. It's a nice surprise ending with that (and no, I'm not telling).

I hope I've told you enough about the book to spark an interest in reading it. It's a touching tale of making the world a better place, one person at a time. This is where I agree with the recommended reading for ages 11-17. I'm not sure that it shouldn't be required school reading!

This past week I got out the sewing machine and my 2 inch squares that were already cut and experimented with making hot pads that I want to give out for Christmas.  I found the black lining that I wanted to use, to not be heat resistant.....oops!  I made another one using left over t-shirt on the back.  It looks pretty good, and I do end up with t-shirt backs after I cut the rounds of shirts making my rugs.  I only completed 2 pot holders.   I am thinking now I want to try the cushions covers from the old futon for the backs....will check their heat resistance first.

I completed the red, white, and blue toothbrush rug made with t-shirts.  I found a sheet in my closet that I had previously cut out a small set of curtains from, so I am back now working on the other rug.

I just have to finish the fringe on one side of the prayer shawl and then it's finally done!

I am currently reading The Capablanca Variation by Douglas Quinn.  It was sent to be by the author to read and review.  Be on the look out as I will also be giving away my copy in a blog giveaway with my review.

WIP Wednesday

Remember, your WIP (work in progress) doesn't have to be crafting.  It can be a novel you are writing, gardening, home make-overs etc as well.

I think the 3rd time might be a charm on actually completing a toothbrush rug.  I figured out, I think, that I was making my stitcehs too tight, and that was causing the bowing.  I ended up trying to starch the last one down.  I left it small and it's out for the granddaughters to use to play dolls with.  I plan on finishing the color I am on on this current one, adding 2 other colors that I have out and going from there on the size.  Realistically to make it more of a real rug size I think I will end up having to find at least 2 other colors in my t-shirt stash.

Hey...look at me....at least I've started putting on the second color on the prayer shawl.

Another WIP for me, that is not craft related, is reading a book.  I've rec'd Hidden Truths from Brenda Youngerman to read and review.  I will also be doing a giveaway of it on my blog along with my review.  It's certainly a good book so far!
