Frugal Friday With Marsha--Making Use of The Public Library

Lately we've been making use of the public library again--making weekly visits.
I'm not sure how we got out of the habit of going, but it started again several weeks ago when my daughter wanted to stop in and look for a movie to check out.

We ended up checking out several movies as well as a music cd.  They didn't have the movie she wanted anymore, so we made use of the inter library loan to get it.

We have a good sized library, but it's wonderful that if by chance they don't have what you ate looking for, you can borrow it from another library.  They even give you extended check out time since it's borrowed.

This past week I checked out a book to use with Jasmine for math.  We had used the prior book in the series already.   She also checked out a few books to read on her own.  I checked out 2 music cd's as well.

THe public library's always have fun things going on.  Currently our library is doing a program they call Blind Date With a Book.  You choose a manilla envelope with a book inside, read it, then write a short review to have your name put in a drawing for prizes.  The outside of the envelope does tell the genre of the book inside.
My first book was called Motel of the Mysteries---it sure was an entertaining book and a quick read.  The genre said futuristic science fiction.   I've already returned it and picked another envelope.  I chose the genre young adult fiction and ended up getting Holes.  Who knows, while I am getting in more reading than I've done in a long time, I may actually win a prize too.

I always had my children signed up for the summer reading program each summer.  Now I make sure the grandkids get signed up for it.  Reading is important---and they get trinket prizes for their reading as well.

Our library has an internet room.  I'm not sure how many computer are in there but it's around 25.  People are allowed to use the computers in there up to 2 hours each day, except Sunday is 1 day.  If the room is full, you are assigned a pager so they can let you know when it's your turn.  In the past I've had to use the room quite often when my computer was down.
The library now offers the wifi throughout the library so you are free to bring your own laptop in anytime you choose.  They've added more tables and more plug ins.  They even have 3 laptops that you can check out---for the same time as you would have in the internet room.

They put in a "coffee bar".  You can order coffee, cookies, juice, muffins etc.   I just had to buy a big chocolate chip cookie when we were in this week.  They were baking them and that smell was throughout the library!

What I miss is the library book sales.  They used to have them twice a year.  I always went on the 2nd day when they let you buy a grocery cart of books for $8.  I'm not sure why they haven't had a sale now in 2 years, but I am going to ask.    They have a used book store inside the library all the time.  Books average in price of $1.    They also always have a cart outside the doorway that is full of items that are free.  I've actually gotten some good stuff from the free cart.

What's going on at your public library right now?

Homeschool Journal--Great Week!

Hip Homeschool Hop ButtonAh ha!  Jasmine and I finally had a great week last week with schoolwork.  An excellent week in fact.

The good week was attributed mostly to her friend.  They wanted to spend time hanging out most of the week.  This meant Jasmine knew that before she could go hang out, or before her friend could come over here, she had to have her school work done.  Her friend called her early every morning to make sure she was getting out of bed.  It was great actually!

Tuesday was my sewing club day at church.  Jasmine still attends Bible study upstairs until about noon.  Once study is over she comes downstairs, has her lunch, then works on school work until 2:30 or so when we start cleaning up for the day.  I snuck in this shot of her working.....you should have seen the look she gave me afterwards!  You can see some of our projects laying all around her.
We made a trip to the library and checked out several books on England.  We still had 2 books we didn't get read about Greece, but we will get back to those.  I think it's a lot more important right now for her to learn about England since she is make a trip there in March.  Everything is looking good so far for the trip.  They had a Papa John's fundraiser this last weekend.  On the 27th they are doing an Indian Taco supper fundraiser.  I think that is the last that they have planned.  They have worked hard for over a year to earn their money to go.

School work otherwise last week, we made good progress in all the subjects.  Yesterday was a holiday, as you know.  I let Jasmine have a friend overnight, so she was here through supper yesterday.  I also had let my grandson spend the night with us since he didn't have school.  I took him home late afternoon.   Had the 2 of them not been over, we would have done some book work.  I do hope to have another successful week---as well as each week throughout the "end" of the school year.

Homeschool Journal--Finally a Good Week

Finally we had a good full school week this past week.  My tracking book and times look great.  We made it through every subject 4 days last week!

We are taking a little bit of a math break.  Jasmine is doing problems daily on the dry erase board, but otherwise we have been watching videos and reading out loud in a book put out by Barnes and Noble called Basics--Saving Money.  In the Introduction to Business text book there is always a section at the end of each chapter that also is a bunch of math too.  After the holidays we will hit it hard again.

We are still reading books about Greece.  We have 4 books yet to finish.  Some are smaller, but the photos in them are great.  We are getting repeat lessons from different books, but that's ok...drilling it in to our heads more.  I'm wondering what country she will want to learn more about next.  It was going to be England because her youth group was planning a trip there in March.  They weren't able to raise all of the money needed for the trip so they are not going to be able to go.  They will go somewhere in the states now.

I don't have any photos to share yet again this week of Jasmine.  I told her that I need to work on that.

This week is going to be another good week for schoolwork, then we are pretty much taking off the next 2 weeks.  There are some things we will still do daily such as our devotions and some reading here and there.  Next week will be candy making and baking week.  I will get lots of pictures then!

I'm going to stop babbling for now.  We are about to head out the door to church for our weekly Tuesday morning Bible study.  Then it's off for our weekly trip to the public library.

Homeschool Journey--Making Use of the Public Library

Hip Homeschool Hop Button Again last week we only ended up with 2 days of what I call full school.  By that I mean that all of the books got pulled out and we worked every subject.

I am super busy with my crafts.  I've decided it's a must to up my income.  They won't sell if they aren't made!

We always go to the library each Tuesday after Bible study.  Right now we still have 5 books about Greece to read.  I'm building a squidoo lens highlighting the books we are reading, photos, and what we are learning.  I will share that once we get through all of the books.  This last week we went to the video section.  For now, watching educational videos throughout the week is going to be part of our routine.
We only watched 2 last week.  One was on Ghost Ships of the Great Lakes and the other was Alex Anderson Teaches You to Start Quilting.  Ok, the quilting video was for me, but she really paid attention to it.  So much that I'm sure she will be reminding me a lot of what the lady was teaching.  Yep....home-ec.

I need to work harder at cracking down on her to work on things that she can do on her own.

I have a software to review called the Algebrator.  I hope to get that done tomorrow.  Along with the review will be a giveaway here on my blog.  Jasmine is actually excited to give it a try and see if seeing the problem worked in front of her will help her understand it better than me working problems on the board for her to see and reading how to do them out of a book.

I will leave you with this photo of Jasmine holding up one of her chalk pastel drawings.

Saturday April 4

Good Morning! Typing in my blog real quick before we head out to the library book sale. Man, finding a ride was tough. Actually we have a ride to the library then my mom has to work to find us a ride home. This sucks (for lack of a better word) not having my own transportation. I must make enough money to get the van running again.
Yesterday my brother called pretty much at the last minute saying he did have to drive the school bus and couldn't take us to the funeral. We did find another ride, getting there right after it started.

I'm very disappointed...hardly anyone showed up for the Spring Fling yesterday. I've been blogging about it for a couple weeks and getting the word out. The last day is Monday, at which time I present my crafts in the evening. I'm including the button again in hopes some of you will read this and consider coming in Monday.
If you have any ideas of other places I can get the word out, please let me know!
Under The Rainbow Spring Fling!

I'm heading out to the library now, and once home I will be busy scanning, looking up and listing books.

The weather is to be awesome today here in Kansas. Tomorrow is a different story. Have a great Saturday!

Friday April 3

Good Morning! In weather news it says today's high is 63, tomorrows high 72, then Sunday it drops to 40 with rain. I just want warm and for it to stay warm.

In other news...today is my cousins funeral. It was nice to see the relatives yesterday that we haven't seen for years, but very hard to watch them cry over the death of their father and grandfather.
I went ahead last night and did all my cleaning (sweeping, vacuuming etc) that I have set myself to do on Friday's. I know today is going to be busy.

It's the 2nd day of the Spring Fling at Under The Rainbow. I won't be able to go in there until after the funeral and such.
Tomorrow is the library book sale. I had a ride set up but now she tells me her boyfriend wants her to go out of town with him. I need to find a ride! This is something I can't afford to miss as I need more books to add to my selling inventory.

I didn't get a squidoo lens updated yesterday, although I need to get in and get my Under the Rainbow Gifts, Cello In a Box, and Sample Gal lenses updated with the April specials. Here it is the 3rd and that's not done.
I only just did one extra post on gather yesterday and that was sharing my savings plan.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned that I am working on quitting smoking. I've been smoking 1 less cigarette per day. Today I get to smoke only 4. I am getting to the end. I will be relieved, but at the same time I am nervous as I've counted on smoking as a relaxer for almost 30 years! Say some prayers of strength for me.

That's it for today. Here is wishing you a great start to the weekend.

Sunday October 26

Good Morning!
As you can see, I made it through yesterday. The kids and I had fun buying books at the library book sale. Once home I started getting them scanned or pics taken of them. I got 3 craft books listed in my blujay store. I have 20+ books sitting here beside me to list at homeschoolbuy. Not sure how many I will get in today since we do have church this morning and then Bible study this evening.
My daughter and I went to pick up our food orders from the Angel Food Ministry.
I got a call to come in earlier to help with the German fundraising dinner at my church. I spent 5 hours helping there. It was fun. Once home I was going to work on the books but did my spotwinner, mycoolcontests, and posted a couple of posts at gather.

The weather was great yesterday with a high of 77!! It's supposed to be in the high 60's through Halloween and I sure hope so.

Today I will share my mail call post of gather. Mail Call! Week of October 19

Almost 8 am and Sunday school starts at 8:45 so I better run and get the kids ready to go.

Have a blessed day,
Marsha
