Frugal Friday With Marsha--Trip to the Casino

A trip to a casino and frugal just somehow don't seem to go together.  However, I took a day trip with my daughter and her friend this week to the Boot Hill Casino.
The original plan was that we were going the week of the 27th when my husband could go too.  That's his vacation week.  We found out that the tour company didn't have a bus going the Tuesday of that week.   We still wanted to go, so we did.

See, Village Tours, is having a special this month.  As long as you bring at least 2 friends with you, everyone rides free.  It's normally $35 a person for the day trip.  How can you pass up riding free when you still get the $25 in free play at the casino and the $10 food voucher?

I took along $30.  I had some good luck on my very first spin.  I spent $1.50 max bet on a quick hits machine and won $67.25 on my first spin.  I vowed I was going to save that cash out voucher and not cash it in until leaving.....but I didn't.  
What I did have was a LOT of fun.

Not a bad day out for $30.  I got the ride on the bus to the casino, $25 in free play on the slots, and a good lunch for that $30.....not to mention a day away that was lots of fun.  In the end I was literally playing a penny at a time on the slots....and wondering why I didn't do that all the time. Now I am itching to go back to do it.  Hubby and I do plan on going on a trip of our own in April for our birthdays and free steak dinners.

We discovered that the bus has 110 plug ins as well as a free wi-fi hot spot.  I was already doing some things on my phone like rabadaba and tsu on the bus ride with mobile data.  On the way home I used the wi-fi.  So, I still earned some pennies while gone, but had I known about the wi-fi, I would have brought my tablet and did some traffic exchange clicking too.

I took this picture as we were leaving.  That's the bus we were on.  It's a 2 hour bus ride each way then 5 hours at the casino for the day trip.

WIP Wednesday --Back to My Schedule?

I decided Sunday I was going to try to get back to the schedule I made myself for getting things done.  I'm feeling a little out of control by not having set routines.

Sunday I pulled out the t-shirt latch hook rug to work on.

Monday I got out the 3 inch squares for the Arkansas Roads quilt so that I could start making the lines for the half square triangles.  That didn't work out well.  I got them out of the box and drew one whole line.  It's sit n' sew at the quilt shop this Friday night so I plan on working on something on it there.

Tuesday is doll sets and I went on the bus trip to the Boot Hill Casino again so took those along.  I did get a little work done on the rugs on the ride.  I carry this little bag in my purse so I can work on these in any down times---if I would just do it instead of messing on my phone.

I didn't restart my schedule until Sunday so that really is all that I got done since last Wednesday.
I did forget to mention last week that I finished the Hexagon Flower table runner.  Hopefully I will soon have it listed for sale in my etsy.

Wednesday is my day to work on the color of the month with the soscrappy blog scrap challenge.  It's purple this month so I will pull out purples in hexagons (which are my project to work on Saturday) and work on the purple 4 patches that I started last time the color was purple.

I have Thursdays to be to work on any other UFO.  I haven't decided yet which one that will be.  Then Friday is yo-yos.

WIP Wednesday--Yep, It's All Still in Progress

Oh my.  I'm pretty sure that I only managed to find time to work on one thing this week.  In fact, I don't even really have time to write this blog post!

My husbands mother passed away early Sunday morning.  We knew ahead of time and family had gathered over the weekend.  You can imagine that it's been pretty hectic with preparations and all that goes with it on top of my normal busy life.

Anyway, I got out my little brown squares with good intentions of putting together the ones from the mini charm pack for a table topper and then to get the rest of them in to 4 patches throughout the week.   My sewing machine and little ironing board and iron have set here next to me all week.
I did get the table topper started.  It will now be put away, probably until the quilt retreat.  I will try to find something for sashing, backing, and binding and pack it in a bag to take then. (At least that is my plan)

Hopefully things settle down again starting Friday----at least back to the normal about of being busy anyway!

Time to check in with the soscrappy blog and see what the color is for March.

Frugal Friday With Marsha--Week in Review

It's been a pretty normal busy week around our house.    Our family night out included going to the music program that my 3rd grade granddaughter, Willo, was in.  They did a good job and the music was good.  If you are a member of tsu, I did share a photo there.

A blessing happened this week.  I received my box of Renuzit items in for review and inside I was one of the lucky winners of a $50 Visa card!  I am saving this back to help me pay for most of the quilt retreat I am attending at the end of April.  

Yesterday when I was going down the topics in chatabout I ran across Freebie Pictures as a topic.  I hope to get to sending for more freebies to add to the items that I get in for review.  I did send for some Centrum vitamin samples this week and you will find that link shared in my tsu as well.  This week for review I received the 3 Renuzit products as well as some all natural shampoo and conditioner. ( I plan to have my Renuzit post up tomorrow with a giveaway where 3 winners will each win a free coupon)

I had hoped that the seeds that my daughter started for me last Friday would have sprouted in the 7 days, but not so far.  I have been spritzing them with water twice daily.  Here is what the kitchen window looks like so far.  We can plant outside around the first of April.

I picked up my free Take 5 candy bar from the Dillon's Friday freebie.  If you have a Kroger store in your area, make sure to get your free item each week.  This week the freebie is Kroger Greek yogurt and I just added it to my card and my mom's card.

I used some of my amazon earnings to order cat food and black ink for our printer.  The cat food came in just on the day that I fed the cats the last of what was in the container.  I will be sharing the various places where I earn amazon in my February earnings post in early March.

That's about it for this week.  I look forward to seeing what comes about this week.

WIP Wednesday --Wrapping Up February

I don't have much to share this week.  I've had some days of no sewing or crafting motivation--mostly due to just being so busy outside of the home, but I did get some things done.

I finished the 2nd pink 4 patch and delivered it to quilt guild to be given to an agency called First Call for Help.

I worked more on the brown colored hexagons.  I only got about 10 or 11 done throughout the week so chose not to take a picture.

I worked a tiny bit on one of the doll rugs while out and about since I carry that bag in my large purse.

I got out the brown little squares and started string sewing them together.  I will work this week to at least finish stringing, but hopefully more.  Only a few more days left for brown to be the challenge color with the soscrappy blog.

Last week at church there was a box of yarn donated to use to make prayer shawls.  I didn't mean to, but ended up being the one to take it home.  I was told a story based on the one that I am working on now.  I'm sure it was started to be a blanket, but I am going to finish it as a prayer shawl and offer it back to the man who donated the yarn first.   See, it was a project that his first wife had started and he's been hanging on to it for many years since.  She was murdered back in February of 1977.  I'm not sure if he will want it as a prayer shawl, but feel it's fitting that he should have it if he wants it.

American Heroes Quilts Past & Present

American Heroes Quilts Past & Present is full of history and quilts.
400 color and black and white images included along with in depth stories of quilts patterns named for, or associated with, famous Americans.  55 American heroes in all including Benjamin Franklin, Davy Crocket, George Custer, Carrie Nation, Charles Lindbergh, and Rosa Parks.   Four chapters that begin with the year 1776 and end with the year 2000.  Famous Americans from every year in between.

This is another quilt book that would have made a great addition to our history while I was homeschooling.  So much interesting history including some heroes who are all but forgotten today such as Isaac Hull, Tad Lincoln, Jacob Coxey, and Allen B. Dumont.

Did you know that the Scottie Dog quilt block is believed to have been named for Franklin D Roosevelt's Scottie, Fala?  However, the pattern became popular in the 1930's and Fala wasn't born until 1940.  Fala's popularity certainly helped the Scottie Dog block become a staple in the quilting lexicon.

Included in the back of the book is a Sampler Quilt Projects Supplement.  This includes 4 sampler quilts and the templates for making 25 blocks.  They will need to be enlarged to make 10 inch squares as they are in the sampler quilts shown.

I'm up to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in my reading and can't wait to read through the entire book.  I love the rich history, but even more with quilting involved with it.  I see lots of blocks throughout the book that I have fallen in love with and want to give a try at making. There are over 100 quilts pictured in the book and close-up photography of all 112 patterns.

About the author:
Don Beld had a passion for history, which led him to explore all facets of commemorative quilt making. He co-authored Civil War Quilts. He is the curator of the New England Quilt Museum, and founded the Home of the Brave Quilt Project. He also curated a quilt collection commemorating the events of September 11, 2001, and other terrorist attacks. His lectures have helped many people realize that quilters are the folk-art-historians of their time.

So, again, this is a book that anyone who loves history will like, and if you are a quilter, or love quilts, even more so.  I give it an A++ for sure!
