Frugal Friday on Thursday

I have a bus trip tomorrow to the Kansas City Regional Quilt Show and the bus leaves at 6 am.  Yes, I could write this into draft to auto publish tomorrow, but I like things live  :)

A little about the trip because I feel that it's a frugal trip.  If you are going to take a trip, this is just about as frugal as you can get.  My quilt guild is paying for a good portion of the tour bus and each member paid just $15.   Then, the guild bought the entrance tickets to the quilt show in advance, so we paid $15 each for those, saving $2 at the door.

I've been using my PerkTV points to add money to the Perk Plastik card.  That will be the most of my spending money for the day.   I'm glad I thought of that!
I have cash also just in case some of the vendors don't take a Discover card (which is what the Perk Plastik is).   I reached payout with inboxdollars.  They pay by check.  I cashed the check and have that money for just in case.

WIP Wednesday --My Machine Was Out!

I actually had my machine out---twice this past week!

The first time was at the quilt shop for sit n' sew.  There I got the 5th of 10 rows added to my Arkansas Crossroads quilt.  Then I sat and figured out just how many more half square triangles that I need to complete the rest of the blocks.  I am a little sad that I still need to make 70 more.....I should grab those and start working on them once I get this post done.

The second time was here at home.
I worked on the space themed coasters and got another step closer to finishing the green string blocks.

My friend found a couple smaller pieces of black and white fabric in her stash and gave them to me.  I'm heading Friday to the Kansas City Regional Quilt Show so I knew I had to get the black and white with a little red quilt top out and see if what she gave me would be enough to finish the blocks.  I wanted to know as to know if I needed to be on the look out for more while at the show.
Yes!  I was able to finish the remaining 14 blocks.   Hoping to work more on this quilt over the next week.

And, last, but not least, I got more work done on the yo-yo projects.  I put a few more yo-yo's on to the first valance, but the lighting was so bad that I was having a terrible time working with the invisible thread.   I decided to get more yo-yo's made instead.  I still have quite the pile of fabric in my box to make in to yo-yo's.

If I can continue to have this much to show each week, I will feel like I am actually accomplishing something!  Wish me luck!

Drawing Calm -- Book Review

Drawing Calm:  Relax, Refresh, Refocus with 20 drawing, painting, and collage workshops inspired by Klimt, Klee, Monet and More.

Written and illustrated by Susan Evenson with a foreword and commentary by Mary Rockwood Lane, R.N, M.S,N., PhD, Creative Healing Educator.

I find it relaxing just to look through the book.  Drawing Calm will teach you the importance of taking time away from your busy life and calm your brain with any of the workshops within the book.

After the Getting Started section, which includes setting up your workshop, tools and materials to gather, your soundtrack and the fine details, there are 8 chapters.

The chapters include:
Warm-Up Exercises
Delight
Quiet
Warmth
Harmony
Calm
Light
Rhythm
Maintaining the Calm

Throughout the book you will also find what they call Sidebars.   To me they are inspirations---the reasons these workshops are so important for you and your life.  They are written by Mary Rockwood Lane and include subjects such as Creative Repose, Concentration and Mindfulness, Communicate and Connect and more.

My daughter flipped through the book and seen that some of the workshops include using magazines.  Right away she said she wanted to work on those and start getting good use out of the magazines she has stacked up.
She liked the Catalog of Dots in the Maintaining the Calm chapter.

I see several workshops that I would like to give a try, but as a quilter, I was immediately drawn to the Doodle Quilt in the Rhythm chapter.

I am definitely adding this book into my craft/sewing room.  As I work to clean out and reorganize, I WILL be setting up a corner for my "drawing calm" work space!   I need these.

WIP Wednesday-- Just One Thing

It was a horrifically busy week this past week.  Sadly I only worked on sewing just one day.  That wouldn't have even happened if I hadn't thought to take my yo-yo's with me as I ran the church rummage sale.

So, here you go, my progress on one valance.

I must stay busy on these, and I mean daily, even if it's only adding 2 or 3 on the super busy days.

Sit n' sew is Friday at the quilt shop, so God willing I will make it there to get more work done on the Arkansas Crossroads quilt top.
My friend gave me a bit of black and white fabric so that will be a help to finish that quilt.  I need to buy just one more fat quarter and that should be all I need.

I'm looking forward to checking out the soscrappy blog to see what this month's color is.

Check Out This Disney Classic Paint-By-Number Kit

Do you like Disney Classics?  Do you like to paint-by number?
If so, then this kit is definitely for you!

This in not the ordinary paint-by-number set that you usually see either.  What I mean by that is that it's more advanced.  You don't just use one color, you have to mix the colors.  The spot might say 1,2 or 8,3,3 etc.  That way the colors are true to the actual scenes and characters.

Don't worry, the 48 page instruction book includes pictures of each color for each picture so you can match from it to make sure you have it right.
The book is also super sweet as it shows pictures from each of the Disney Classic movies as well as information and memorable moments from each one.

WIP Wednesday--A Finish

I promised myself I would work on something each day no matter what.  I was doing well....until yesterday.

First let me start with a finish.  I've been wanting to do the rag quilt for a long time.  I finished a baby blanket for my grandson that is due in September.
I have more of these to make or work on, once I cut the rest of my flannel pieces.

I sewed what 1 inch strips I had ready together for a start on a locker hook runner rug.......now I just have to figure out where I put the new package of canvas that I bought!

I got some more green strips put on to my string blocks.  I'm thinking one more color and I can feel like I can start putting the blocks together.

I put together a set of 6 coasters just waiting to finish when I get my sewing machine out again.

And, I actually got a start putting the fist valance together with the yo-yo's

So, as you can see, I did get in quite a few things worked on.  Now if I can just keep it up then more and more of the projects will start to get finished.
