Frugal Friday With Marsha -- Saving Change

Do you save your change?  I have for years and years.  Most of the time I am saving it for something specific.  In recent years I've been saving it to help me pay to be able to attend the quilt retreats.
One time I was saving it just because and it ended up paying for 3 nights for us to rent a camper one vacation!

This past week I virtually had no money and it was the monthly ladies lunch and games day at church.  The other ladies decided amongst themselves that we would go to Spangles to eat.  hhmmm.....how were my mom and I do do that with no money?
I've been putting my change in the change slots in the console of my car and the quarter slot was full and the nickel and dime slots were close to full.
I used that change to pay for our lunches!!

No, eating out is not really frugal, but saving your change is a good way to save up for a treat like that.   Plus, it's good socially and mentally to have the day out too.

Swagbucks saved me this week when my $25 PayPal redemption came in just in time to cover an automatic payment coming out of my PayPal and the cats were out of food and we were out of toilet paper, and my car was close to empty!
Even better news with Swagbucks is that I will have enough points today to cash out for another $25 in PayPal, that I'm sure again will come in just when I need it.

Speaking of cat food, I found out that Ibotta offers a small percent back for shopping amazon through my phone and that pet supplies is on their list.   I should have just enough left in my gift card balance to get another bag of cat food ordered, which should come in just when I run out of what I bought at the store tomorrow.   I've only been cashing out for amazon once a month through Swagbucks when I can get the once a month special to get the $25 gift card for 2200 sb instead of 2500.

Very nice to be able to earn online and with apps!

I'm super busy working on different sewing projects.  I will be getting more things listed for sale in my Etsy shop, plus I am getting things ready to enter into the State Fair.  You will see my progress on these items in my WIP Wednesday post.
Of course I am using supplies that I have won at the quilt retreats and that people have "handed down" to me when cleaning out their sewing rooms, or left overs from other projects.   I am very blessed to have an ongoing supply to keep my busy making things.

Until next week, let's keep on saving and earning!!

Frugal Friday with Marsha -- Gift Cards

MarshasSpot

This past week I've thought a lot about money. Not that I don't think about it a lot all the time, but this week was more.
I found myself upset that I had to spend all of my earned Target gift cards to buy cat food and cat litter.
I've come to the conclusion that I must be happy that I had them to buy the food and litter!

It really is great that I can earn the gift cards. Most of them are earned through running the apps on my phones. Swagbucks being my number one earner, and then PerkTV.
With those I take turns between getting amazon, Walmart, and Target. Amazon, of course, is used online through amazon. Recently I purchased a new cell phone battery and then a charger as well. Target cards have to be spent online or input into the Target app to be scanned and used at the store (which is what I do). The Walmart cards can be spent online, but they are also printable to be used in the store (which again is what I do).

What bothered me the most last week was that I had to spend all of them that I had. I'm more used to always having some available so when I see a good deal online I can gather my coupons and go spend my Target cards, usually getting more back for what I am buying. I didn't even bother to look up deals this week with nothing to spend. Yes, that is what bothered me the most.

As I said, it hit me just how fortunate I am to have the opportunity to earn the gift cards....period! They are very helpful all the way around.
Today I should have $10 in Walmart cards in my email. I'm heading there in a bit where I always buy what the Friday Freebie is on savingstar and the healthy choice item for the week if it's something we will eat. (Last week was asparagus, which we don't eat).

I did get the pleasure of a pretty good grocery shopping trip this past week. I had the Friday Freebie of the Tostitos snack on my Dillons (Kroger) card. I then bought a half gallon of milk for $1, 3-16 oz cottage cheese on sale for just .50 each, a 16 oz sour cream on sale for just .50, and 4 pot pies for mu .49 each after sale and digital coupon. I think I got a lot for just $5.38.

How has your week been frugal wise?

Frugal Friday With Marsha 3/13/15

This past week has been a lot about coupons for me again.   I can say that I actually have all of my coupons cut and in to my binder.
I have some lists printed and hand written for shopping both today and after the new sales start on Sunday.

I am getting back to shopping at Walgreens. After another trip or 2, I should be back to not spending much at all out of pocket. Too bad the programs I do don't offer Walgreens gift cards for redemption. Mypoints does, but I don't work in it like I should.
I spent $9.60 on what you see in the picture and earned 6000 balance reward points and took home a $3 register reward.
You can read more about it HERE.

Yesterday was a small stock up on toilet paper and oatmeal. $5.56 spent.

I am working hard to keep up this time with my couponing.  First of all for the savings.  Secondly, it provides a lot of the gifts that I give out.  Thirdly, and maybe most important, is that I enjoy it and it makes me happy.
You know what they say--'When mama's happy, everyone's happy'

Now I am heading in to TSU to search through several coupon related hashtags to finish up my lists for today's shopping.

Frugal Friday with Marsha 2/13/15

Good thing I'm not suspicious on this Frugal Friday the 13th!  :)

This has been a busier than usual week.
Hubby and I got our state income tax refund in.  This means we took our yearly 'stock up' grocery shopping trip to Aldi.  Yes, it's the ONE time a year that we spend more than our normal $40 a week for groceries (and that's if we are lucky).  We generally spend about $250 on our stock up trip, but this year were only able to spend $168 due to some past due bills.
It's still nice to not have an empty deep freeze.

We did some menu planning before leaving.  Menu plans for having family over for meals.
Looking back, some of what we did buy, I could have gotten for less money with sales and coupons at other stores.  I can honestly say that I wish I would have had the extra time needed for that planning.

Gasoline is up to $2.19 a gallon here now.  It's not that I can complain compared to gas prices we've seen over the past several years, but under $2 a gallon was extra nice.
A couple times this week I have had to catch rides with church members to save on the gas in my big van.  Yay for those who are willing to do so!  (funerals at church)

I'm still working on my husband to get bills paid ON TIME to avoid the wasted money of late fees.  It's a battle, but I am standing my ground on it.  I downloaded Dave Ramsey's Guide to Budgeting and I am going to send the file over to his computer.  I'm thankful to the person who share that it was a free download!  Click HERE to download it free.

I'm going to leave you this week with some cute Frugal merchandise that I found over on zazzle.
Use the code BUYNSAVEDEAL to save with the President's Day Sale.
I also recently found out that zazzle offers a deal for free shipping. For $9.95 a year you can get Unlimited FREE Standard Shipping on all orders for qualifying products and access to exclusive sales and discounts. They even allow you a 30 day free trial. Free shipping adds up to big savings!

Frugal Friday With Marsha--Week in Review

This week sure seems to have flown by!
Frugal highlights of my week were:

Bare bones grocery shopping and eating from what we already have in the freezer and cabinets.  Unfortunately bare bones shopping is a necessity right now.

We went to the Salvation Army and had the certified IRS tax preparers there do our taxes for free over paying H&R Block over $200 this year!  This was a major accomplishment on my part to finally get hubby to agree to go there and save all of that money.

I haven't had a chance to take advantage of sales with coupons this past week.  I did use 4 Angel Soft TP coupons to stock up a bit on those and I shared my other 2 coupons with my mom so she could get some cheap too.

A code that someone shared on TSU for amazon enabled me to order and receive a pair of socks for .50. They are now added to my gifts stash tote.

Our supper last night was ham slices from the freezer, oven fried potatoes, peas and carrots, and crescent rolls.   I opened the Tightwas Gazette book and used her easy instructions for making the oven fried potatoes.  They were yummy and simple.  There are several other recipes in the book that I look forward to using as well.

Gasoline has jumped up to over $2 a gallon now.  I can't complain about $2.09 compared to over $5 we've seen in the past.  I have been making sure to not just run to one place.  If I am out I make the most of my trip.  It pays to plan the best route for no back tracking and to make sure you get everything done that you need while you are out.

I finished my first locker hook rug.  I love having yet another use for scrap fabrics.  I'm itching to start another rug as I still have 2 bags of strips that were given to me.  Currently I've gotten out the big cone of cotton yarn that I was fortunate to find at a yard sale, and crocheting dishcloths/washcloths.   I feel so blessed with other give me materials to work with or I find them cheaply at thrift stores or yard sales!  That makes my crafting very frugal.

I think that's about it for this week's report.  I look forward to seeing what others have posted this week.

Frugal Friday with Marsha 1/23/15

We've made it to another Friday.  How has your week been?
This week I thought I would give you a run down of the frugal/money saving things that I've done this past week.

I've started buying coupon inserts through a coupon friend for .40 each insert. I'm buying in sets of 5.  This is giving me the ability to take better advantage of the sales.
I've been able to get Glade candles for just .33 each after coupon, clearance, and the cartwheel app at Target.
The dollar store sell the Lance cracker 6 packs for just $1 and we have $1 coupons.  This means paying just sales tax and we have snacks in the house.  We've had a huge shortage on anything to just snack on for some time now.

I have been blessed many times over the years since I started sewing and quilting to be given fabrics, whether full pieces, scraps, and such.  This week I took the rug I am making to show my progress when I attended my stitch group.  It so happened that one of the other ladies in the group had picked up this balls of fabric strips out of a free box somewhere she had been that very morning.  She took them knowing that she would find someone who could use them.  Little did she know she would find someone that same day!

I'm not too proud to tell you that I went to the food bank this week.  Our food bank allows you to go once every 2 months.  I will say that in my adult lifetime, this is only the 4th time I've ever gone to the food bank.  I'm glad it's there.  Finances are not as such that we can go do any "real" grocery shopping and hasn't been for a long time.  We can rest easy this week now knowing that we have meat for our meals, plus the other foods that we were also given.

On the note of the grocery shopping, I'm still shopping with the $5 Target and Walmart cards that I am earning from swagbucks and PerkTV.     Today I am using those to buy a block of cheese to take as my part of the carry in dinner we will be having for quilt guild on Monday.  I am also buying Bushe's baked beans as our part of a carry in dinner at church on Sunday (using $1 coupons on the beans).  I will also be getting a gallon of milk for the week and my box of Carnation Instant Breakfast (a $2 coupon on the Carnation printed from swagbucks is saving me $2, but also earning me 10 swagbucks for using it).

If you have a Kroger owned store in your area, don't forget that today is Friday to go in and add the freebie to your card today.  My mom and I will be stopping in to get our freebies.  This week is a
Free Chobani Simply 100 Greek Yogurt (5.3oz) .   Last week was a free Muller yogurt and the week before that a free Power Bar.  We have all 3 things to pick up today!

My husband is finally taking food from home for his lunches at work.  Most of the time he takes leftovers from supper.  If we don't have something leftover he is fixing himself a sandwich, taking a banana, and thanks to the Lance coupons, a package of crackers.

I look forward to seeing what you have posted this last week!

Frugal Friday with Marsha 8/22/14

Good Friday morning!
If your weather has been as hot as it's been here in Kansas this week, I hope you have been staying cool.

It's been a really busy week for me with my merchandising work.

I don't have much to report as far as being frugal.....or maybe I do, you know me once I get to typing.

We had about a 24 hour period with no air conditioning.  I tried to look on the bright side as far as the money we were saving on the electric bill.   We drank lots of iced drinks.

I did cut and put this week's Sunday coupons into my binder.

Hubby and I have had leftovers twice this week for supper....ensuring less waste of food.

I ran across this bubblews post which reminded me of when I did a weekly report pretty much exactly like it when I was writing on Themestream.
I'm sharing the post that she wrote for this day and at the same time noticing that she writes these o a regular basis:

How I Saved Money Yesterday-8/15/14

Enjoy and I look forward to posts that you will link up this week!!

Frugal Friday with Marsha 5/16/14

This week has been spending a lot of time in the garage attempting to prepare for a garage sale that starts tonight then goes tomorrow.
A task that I should have been working on for a month!
I have had 2 aunts die in the last year and we put my mother-in-law into a home. This means that I brought stuff home from both my Aunt Donna's and my Aunt Thersea's and hubby has busily been bringing stuff home from his mom's house since her house is now sold.
What a mess!!

I really feel the need to put an ad in the newspaper to advertise our sale. I don't feel the need to pay the $26.25 that they want to only say Multi-family garage sale, our address and the day and time! That is highway robbery, as my mom says.
We don't have high ticket items to sell and usually I would be lucky to make $20 at a sale, if even that!

I've put the ad on craigslist. I've posted it to my status in facebook as well as to the local garage sale group. We also have a local buy, sell and trade facebook group. They co-own a website called BST Exchange. I've put the ad on the exchange and then posted the ad to that group too.
My mom is calling in to the local radio talk show this morning to advertise.
We then have a few signs made up to hang on some corners. Will it be enough? I can only hope and pray that it will.

Garage sales are so much work for such little turn over, at least for us they are.
I need to look through what is left of my couponing stash....I know I have some toothpaste and shave gel in excess and that generally will sell.

Last week I bought groceries at Walmart and spent $40 ($39.19 to be exact) on what seems like so little.
I bought:
16 lb bag of cat food
bagels
whipped cream cheese
8 pack of frozen burritos
sour cream
bag of salad
taco sauce
2 cup bag of shredded cheese
Carnation Instant Breakfast
.98 box of mini chewy sweetarts
gallon of milk

I've found myself wishing I had shopped at Aldi instead. In fact, when I get $40 again to spend I'm going to go to Aldi and experiment.
I know I can't get the sweetarts, but I can find some other sort of candy. They also don't sell my breakfast drink so I will have to know to take off $5 for that. I will be sure to post my results once I do.

Groceries are horribly priced these days! I'm working towards catching up with cutting and sorting my coupons once again. It's a must that I start paying attention to what is on sale and price matching and matching coupons as well. $40 a week for groceries is about my limit on what I can spend. As you can see from my list that $40 only really covered 1 meal and breakfasts, plus feeding the cats.
I could only do that last week because of the meats I got on markdown the week before.
It all works out in the end, but I'm missing my bargain coupon shopping.

How has your frugal week been?

Frugal Friday With Marsha 4/25/14

Another week, another dollar.  Oh wait, that's another day, another dollar.

What have you done this week to save money?

I'm not sure that I can say that I've saved any money.

I bought some half price Easter candy, but did I need it?  Not really. I ate it, and I enjoyed, yes, but just because I saved money didn't mean that I needed it.
There  is a huge difference between what we need and what we want.  Candy is just a small example of that.
But let's face it, none of us want to live with just truly needs.  If that was the case, I wouldn't be here as my laptop is not a need for survival.  Again, just one example.

This week I read a post that told how he had called Verizon and talked to them about their new plans.  He wrote that he got a plan that was way better than the one he had and that it was costing him $30 less per month for the new plan.
I told my husband to call Verizon and see if we could also get a better plan.  He didn't do it, but that's a whole other story.
I guess I can call in, I'm just not sure if they will talk to me since it's not my account.  Doesn't hurt to at least try to find out.
We get a 19% discount 'supposedly' already for hubby working for Sara Lee, but I think we are paying too much.

I visited my daughter for the day yesterday for my birthday.  I've been wanting to check out the little Hometown grocery store.  I had $10 on me, so this time we walked and went in.
The store is small, so prices aren't.  I found pasta on sale for .89 a box and bag.  I bought 2 packages.  That seemed like a pretty good deal and we are out of pasta aside from some spaghetti noodles.
I also bought some cans of tomato sauce on sale for .39 each.
But........other than those things we bought chewing gum.  They had brands that I didn't even know they sold anymore like Chicklets and Fruit Stripe, and Freshen Up.  They also sale my favorite flavor of Lifesavers, which is Butter Rum.  That flavor is close to impossible to find.  The only place here in town that I know of that sells it is the clinic pharmacy and they are way across town.
Not a need, but a want, but I will be stopping at that little store every time now just to buy myself a roll of my favorite Lifesavers.

Examples can go on and on, but I will stop here for this week.
Any good stories from you this week on savings, or saving, but on something you really didn't need?
Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments.
If you've written blog posts, be sure to share those too!

Frugal Friday with Marsha 3/28/14

It's hard to believe that March is almost over. A month ago today I was off to a weekend quilting retreat. It was here in town at a building at our state fairgrounds. It was my first retreat and I hope more to come.
I'm still kind of reeling from spending the $75 to go but I know it was important for me to get away from it all for a bit. I had a great time, completed 2 projects, and came home with $69 retail in prizes and goodies too. Of course we also were fed all of our meals and snacks.

This has felt like a rough week. There has been NO money to spend. Yesterday I did get in a $12 check for doing surveys and was able to buy milk. I'm expecting a paycheck in the mail today from my merchandising job.
I have a smallish list made out of essentials.
I'm actually going to shop at Aldi where I know that items are cheaper. I need to make shopping there a habit since I can't keep up with my coupons, and it's rare to have a coupon for milk, eggs, etc anyway.

Speaking of coupons.....I've not cut out the coupons from the Sunday papers for 4 weeks now! I'm having a hard time working that back in to my routines.
I've looked through them and taken out ones that I wanted to use right away. I have used coupons that I've printed from the internet too.
Not saving much this way.

I'm still reading Lean Body, Fat Wallet: Discover the Powerful Connection to Help You Lose Weight, Dump Debt, and Save Money It's such a good book and I highly recommend it. I'm working more on the health part and changing my diet....next comes exercise.
I still need to get my husband on board on the wealth part of the book since he is the main money earner and bill payer.

Motivate me!

Frugal Friday With Marsha 3/7/14

I am finding that I just don't know what to write about this week.
My husband hadn't paid the cable bill in 2 months and we are now without internet at home.
I am having to attempt to get my things done time permitting at the public library.
I am finding this very stressful.

At one point to save money we had went to just the very basic cable channels and internet.
I am guilty of asking him to add the channels back up to 63 as I was missing the tv series that I enjoy watching.
He's a sucker for a salesperson and was talked into getting the bundle package.  So, instead of adding $30 a month to the bill, he ended up adding $100.  I told him right away to take it back, he never did.
We've been discussing it lately, but he still didn't do it.
I'm not on the bill or authorized to make decisions on it.

To say that I am still mad is an understatement.  I just feel like he's really 'screwed me over' as he knows that the majority of the money that I earn is earned through the computer.

I know there are tons of people out there that only use their public library, or other free wifi places for their internet.  Hey!  if I had some money to buy at least drink for my daughter and I, we could go to Wendy's late night for internet time.
I will keep that in mind if and when I do get a few $$ in my wallet.

I do hope that you will link up some money saving posts this week....motivational posts of some sort.  Please.

I am still reading Lean Body Fat Wallet.  I have tried to discuss the things from the book with my husband but he is blowing it all off as impossible......even the part of keeping track of what is coming in and what is going out.  He says he doesn't remember what he spends (which is a HUGE problem) and that he won't take the time to carry along a little notebook to keep track.
I know what he spends where for the most part from his checking account statement as he almost always uses his checkcard.  It's the times when he gets money from the ATM that I don't know where it was spent.

Does anyone else have a spouse that is uncooperative in living a frugal/simple life and spends and spends?

Again, please do link up this week.  I really need some encouraging posts to read.  Thanks!!

Chapter 7: Fat Cell and Fat Sales
pg. 111 – 114

Practical Tips for Saving Money
In over twenty years of using coupons, I have saved roughly $160,000 (based on the Cost of Food at Home chart provided by the USDA3). I fed our five school-aged children on about $250 a month. This included toiletries, household cleaners, and medicines. It may sound amazing, but you don’t have to look any further than reality television to see the value of couponing. You’ll find scores of people across the country who are doing the same.
Even after years of being debt-free and having a significantly higher dual-income family than we had when we first got married, I still use coupons. In fact, last year I saved our family of seven over eight thousand dollars by using coupons—and I only spent one and a half hours a week accomplishing this goal. It’s easy, if you are organized.

IMPORTANT COUPONING STRATEGY
Always make sure that you are only using coupons for items you actually need and would want even if the coupon was not available. Whenever possible, purchase those items with the coupon when they’re on sale. Then you’ve paid the least price possible. To simplify these matches of sales with coupons, go to CouponMom.com. This way you’ll  pay even less than you would at discount stores or warehouse clubs.

COUPON APPS AND WEBSITES
Coupon Sherpa and Yowza are great apps to help you find great values at your local store. Download these apps and use them regularly to save 30 percent or more. Both use geographic location or zip codes to target deals at stores near you. You may also want to try the Redlaser app, which can be used to scan the bar code of a product and find out if the item is cheaper somewhere else. As far as websites go, consider using BradsDeals.com or Dealnews.com to get current updates on a variety of bargains.

CLIP EVERY COUPON—SHARE THE SAVINGS
If you don’t use a particular product, you can donate that coupon to a “swapbox.” It’s easy to organize a swapbox at your workplace, club, or church. I’ve even seen moms get together for “virtual swapbox” play dates with their iPads and smartphones to swap Groupon deals, coupon websites, and other great savings ideas.
To create a swapbox of paper coupons, keep a shoebox-sized container in a central location. You can donate your coupons in a Ziploc bag with a piece of paper in the front called a name card. Write your name and date at the top of the name card and you’ll know you donated that bag of coupons. When you look through a bag of coupons, pull out the coupons needed and sign your name to the name card so others know you’ve benefited from their donations. Groups often assign a “coupon coordinator” to pull expired coupons out of the bags at the end of each month. These expired coupons can be mailed to military units overseas since they’re good for six months past the expiration date in commissaries outside the United States. Just e-mail assistant@elliekay.com and put “expired coupons” in the subject line; we will send you a list of bases that could use your donations. Now your friends and family members are also helping military families save money around the world.

PRICE MATCHING—ASK YOUR STORE
If you have a store that will match competitors’ ads, then this helps save time and money. Most Walmart stores offer this benefit to their consumers. This price-matching tip is also good outside of the grocery area because there are dozens of other stores that will honor competitors’ ads, including Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, Target, and more. Since these policies vary from year to year (and even month to month), it’s important to inquire at the customer service desk before you try to use the price-matching benefit.
To implement this tip, just take in all the local sale ads and have the store match the sale price from the circulars. There may be some restrictions, so be sure you ask for the details at the customer service desk. For example, Walmart will not honor a “buy one/get one free,” nor will they honor “percentage off” sales. But they will substitute their brand for other store brands that are on sale and it may even end up being a better quality deal!

SEARCH HIGH AND LOW FOR BARGAINS
In today’s grocery stores, many bargains are located on the top and bottom shelves. The expensive items are at eye level. To those in marketing the reason is obvious—you’ll buy something that’s in front of your nose! Also, avoid the floral, deli, and bakery departments. They’re usually overpriced and can bust your budget.

USE A SHOPPING LIST—DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!
When shopping, you should never leave home without an organized list. It minimizes time spent in the store and helps you stay on target, thus avoiding impulse buying. It can also serve as a reminder of sale prices and coupons you may have. There is an app called Awesome Note, which can be found at Mint.com, that can help you organize a shopping list.

HUNGRY? EAT FIRST OR STAY AT HOME!
Never grocery shop when hungry; you’ll be tempted to buy food you don’t need. Also, leave small children home whenever possible. It seems like they’re always hungry, and they might even try to talk you into buying junk they don’t need—take it from a busy mother of seven!

BUY ITEMS ON SALE AND STOCK UP
When you purchase a product on sale, you’ve usually paid the least price possible for that item. This buying method is different from menu planning. With a specific menu, you’re obligated to buy the groceries on your menu. However, when you buy groceries on sale and stock up, you’ll have a great selection from which to choose your meal. You’ve also paid less. So make up your weekly menu according to what you have in your pantry and save more.

Frugal Friday With Marsha 1/3/13 AND TGIFF!

I hope this post finds you on a good start in to the new year.
So far so good on my goals and challenges, and I feel good about them.
The only one that is really frugal is the way I am saving money for my sewing hobby that I mentioned in last week's post.

On the subject of my sewing and crafts, I've been working to put projects into their own bags.  One gal that is in some of the sewing groups that I go to calls these PIGS (projects in grocery sacks).
What I hope to do is to put everything that I need into each bag that I need to finish the project.

I seriously have enough supplies to keep me busy for at least 5 years, and probably longer, in my craft room already.  I really am being serious about that!
I am going to try really hard to work with materials that I already have and not buy anything else.....period!

I am making this a combination post this week.  I actually have a finish!   I don't think that I finished one quilt in 2013.  I did a few smaller projects----a few wall hangings, and a couple of table runners as far as sewing goes, but that was it.

This is my Penny Patch quilt that I did as part of a QAL (quilt a long).   You can click the button if you would like to click over and see what others made.    I made mine the lap quilt size.

I am also linking this post up to TGIFF (Thank Goodness It's Finished Friday)

Since this is a combination post this week, please feel free to share links in the linky this week that are also craft/sewing related if you would like!   Share posts that have to do with your New Year's goals.  And, of course share any posts you have done that are related to simple living and being frugal!

Frugal Friday With Marsha 12/27/13

Christmas day has past and we are heading in to the New Year.
We are officially in the 12 days of Christmas now.  Do you celebrate?  We really don't here, but I have always wanted to.

Yesterday I sat here and wrote out a list of goal and challenges for myself going in to the new year.  I may share those in a separate blog post, but will share my savings plan with you today.

I have been saving all of my change as well as $1 from every check that I get in.  This savings, I hope, will be for my sewing hobby.  I have an annual membership to pay at quilt guild.  I like to do the workshops when they are offered.  I need $60 to pay for the retreat my guild is having in June.

This plan will stay in effect until I get this laptop paid off.  At that time I will then put $5 in from each check I receive.

I also have started a savings that I am keeping in my purse at all times.  There I am saving any change that I find around the house......you know, in the laundry, bedroom floor that hubby drops......and any change that I might find on the ground while I am out and about.  I am also putting $1 from every check in there.  This money I will use when I see something on clearance, for example, throughout the year that will make a good gift.

Back to the subject of this laptop.  Not a frugal thing on my part.  I am buying it from a rent to own place.  If I can pay it off before February 23, the 6 month mark, then there is no interest.  I have been paying $50 or $54.16 each week in hopes of paying it off in that time.  However, I have missed 4 weeks of doing this over time.  This week makes week 5 of no payment, and this is NOT good.  Silly me anyway.  I picked out a Dell which retails for $1,039.

Lesson learned:  Had I been patient with my slow computer and had been putting that $50 into savings, I could have bought say a $500 or so computer out right.

Do you have any ways that you save money?

I look forward to what you link up this week  :)

Squidoo Hopping---Money Money Money

Yes, money has been on my mind lately---having more of it, saving it, etc.

This week, I ask that you share lenses that have to do with not so much earning money, but saving it---living a simpler life to spend less and the like.
Earth Day is April 22, and comes around before next week's post, so if you have any Earth Day lenses, please also do share those.

As always please share any blog posts you have done regarding squidoo over this past week.  Yes, older blog posts are also welcomed to be linked up as well.

Frugal Friday's With Marsha 7/8/11

This has been a strange week. I don't know if strange is really the word I want, but we allowed my daughter, her 5 children, and her boyfriend to move in with us. Other than the fact that they needed a place to stay, we needed their help with food. We've not had enough to do any real grocery shopping for weeks now.
We've been making it fine on what we had in the freezer and did buy a few pounds of meat over the weeks. They brought with them enough food for at least a week, and my daughter got her food stamps yesterday.

To say the house is going to be crazy, and noisy now, is quite the under statement. It's going to take some getting used to. As much as I love them all, I do hope they get the job situation taken care of and don't have to stay longer than a few months.

I can't really think of too many things that I did that were frugal over this past week, other than the usual hanging clothes on the line. We are also making my daughter hang their laundry out as well. I am linking up my Mailbox Monday post in the linky.

I bought a book that came in this past week. It's called 99 cent Solutions. Each week I am going to share some of the book. I've skimmed the book and it's 1,377 smart uses for every day stuff....this is going to be fun to share some each week!

Applesauce:
Replace the oil in baking--Fat makes baked goods moist and tender. It's also incredibly calorie dense, and if you are cutting calories, it's an easy place to start. Don't like your muffins and cakes dry and tough? Replace up to 2/3 of the oil called for in the recipe with applesauce and you will add moisture and flavor while ditching the fat. (my grandma actually taught me this when I was young and my mom does this most all the time with cake. You can't even tell the difference and it's much healthier!)

Make Holiday Ornaments--mix equal amounts of cinnamon and applesauce to make fragrant ornaments. Start with 1 cup of each and mix, adding more cinnamon if needed to make a stiff dough. Roll dough to half inch thick and use cookie cutters to make shapes, or mold it into hearts or wreaths. Don't forget to use a pencil or something to make a hole for hanging. Let dry for several days on a baking sheet or wire rack. (We've made these and love them. Cinnamon is one of our favorite scents in the house and these are long lasting. It's also a great family time together to make them. You can buy cinnamon at the dollar store fairly cheap.)

Add sweetness and fiber to your oatmeal--You've gone to all the trouble to make a healthy breakfast of oatmeal so don't ruin it by slathering on butter, sugar and cream. Instead, stir in a few tablespoons of applesauce and a sprinkle of cinnamon. You will add sweetness and flavor and even more fiber making it both healthy and delicious. (I actually look forward to trying this since I do put a lot of butter and sugar in my oatmeal.)

That's it for this week. I look forward to reading what others have done this past week in being frugal, living a simple life, saving money etc etc!

Frugal Friday's With Marsha 6/24/11

Good Friday morning to all!
It's Friday, and time to share your frugal type posts from the past week. I do hope you will join in.

This past week Steve and I found ourselves broke. There just wasn't money to buy much as far as groceries. We ate leftovers, and made due with what food we had most of the week. Saturday evenings is Mom's night at our house. Steve did spend a mere little fortune buying a huge pork loin and macaroni salad, potato salad and baked beans for our meal. Only a portion of the pork loin was used and we have 2 more sections cut into roasts in the deep freeze. We ate on those sides for 4 days. I sure admit to getting tired of them! Thursday evening we spent $5.25 at my church eating at the grill night fundraiser, and tonight we pick my teen up from Bible camp and get to eat supper with her.

I'm reading a book called Financial Recovery for review. It's a great book and I'm going to start today with her suggestions so that we can get this money thing in check.

I only made one small run to the store. I didn't buy much, and no big savings. I did use the 2 Suave .75 coupons that I printed from their facebook page to get them for .06 each plus sales tax. Half gallons of milk are on sale 3 for $5, so I picked up a couple of those. That doesn't make it much cheaper than buying a gallon, but every few cents adds up.
My Walgreens and Wal Mart shopping as well as my Mailbox Monday posts are in the linky.

Steve's sister brought over a bunch of chives from her garden. I chopped and dried those in the oven. I love to use them in soups and potatoes.

I've had 2 bags of powdered milk in my cabinet that I rec'd through commodities. I've started mixing it up and using it when I bake and cook. No one's known the difference and it's sure saved on buying milk!

Nothing else really to report--I didn't even do laundry this week, I've still been reeling putting away all the laundry that I did last week. With no kids here this week I've only had to run the dishwasher twice. The air conditioner is still set at 81 and we are most comfortable with that.

New!! Frugal Friday's With Marsha Blog Hop

I've decided to start something new for Friday here on my blog. I hope many will hop along and inspire us all to be as frugal as we can be.

Each week I will share some of the things I've done to be frugal.

Let me start with my grocery shopping this past week. The first trip wasn't as frugal as it should have been, or could have been. I had gone through the Dillon's sales ad and pulled out matching coupons. Steve gave me $40 to spend. I ended up going over that, spending $50.49. I used a total of $27.69 in coupons and my receipt tells me that I saved 55% with sales and coupons. Anything over 50% is pretty good, but I want to strive for more than that.
I won't bore you with the whole list, but here are some of the really good deals:
Keep in mind that my store does double coupons.
*Half gallons of milk were on sale for $1 each, I bought 2.
*Butterfinger Crisp candy bars on close out for .53 each, I bought 2 and used a .50/2 coupon so just .03 each.
*Tostito Chips on sale for $2.99, used $1 coupon so $1.99
*Tostitos Spinach Dip on sale for $2.99, used $1 coupon, so $1.99
*Pepsi Max 2 ltr was free using a coupon buy 2 Tostitos products get it free. The cashier took off $1.25 although it was on sale for .74 so that meant extra off the total bill.
*1 Gatorade, 1 Gatorade G2, and 1 Gatorade Prime--Gatorade on sale for .79, other 2 on sale $1 each. I used a coupon to buy the latter 2, get the Gatorade free. he cashier took off $1.69 instead of the .79 for the free Gatorade, making each one just .30.
*2 Ortego Taco Seasoning on sale for $1 each, used $1/2 coupon making them .50 each.
*3 Crest Toothpaste on sale for $1 each, used 2-$1 coupons and 1-.50 coupon making them all free.
*2 Schick disposable razors, on sale buy 1 get one free making them $3.19 each. I used 2-$2 coupons making them just $1.19 each.
*2 California Kitchen Pizza's on sale for $5 each, used 2-$1.25 coupons bringing them down to $3.75 and I got back a $1 catalina.

The following day I went back to the store for just a few items:
*2 Splenda 80 ct packet boxes on sale for $4.29. I used 2-$3 coupons making them $1.29 each plus I got back a $3 Catalina.
*3 Hershey's chocolate bars on sale buy 2 get 1 free (.89 each) In combination with the sale, I used a buy 1 get 1 free coupon, so I paid .89 for all three.
I also used my $1 catalina from the previous day.
I paid $3.34 with tax, saving 77% with coupons and sales--much more like it.

The following day I made one more trip on this sale.
*4 Tony's smaller pizzas, on sale for $1 each. I used 1-$1/2 coupon and 1-.50/2 coupon bringing them down to .50 each.
*2 Delmonte Fruit cups on sale for $1 each, used $1/2 coupon making them .50 each.
* 1 Yoplait Whips, used free coupon
*2 Butterfinger Crisp candy bars on close out for .53 each, used .50/2 coupon making them .03 each.
*2 half gallons of milk on sale for $1 each.
I also used the $3 catalina coupon from the day before.
I paid $2.76, saving 87% with sales and coupons (this is how I would love it to be each and every shopping trip.)

In other shopping I made 2 transactions at Walgreen's. No super super savings here either, but I still would like to share.
Transaction #1--
*Bic Soleil razors, $5.99, used $3 coupon and got back $3 in RR.
*Noxema razors, $3.99, used $1 coupon and got back $2 RR.
I paid $6.78 and took my $5 in RR's to my--

Transaction #2--
*Wine Out stain remover, on clearance for .75
*Mints, .79 (these 2 my fillers to use the previous RR's)
*Tylenol Precise Heat, $7.99, used $5 coupon in combination with $3 Walgreen's coupon for a 1 cent money maker.
*2 Covergirl Nature Luxe foundation, $12.99, on sale buy 1 get 1 half price, I used 2-$2 coupons, bring the total with sale to $7.74 each.
I then used my $5 in RR's from the first transaction.
I paid $14.35. This was after a total of $17 in coupons. This still means that I saved over 50% No, I'm not really proud of this, but this make-up is the bomb and after using it as a bzzagent I wanted more, and one for my daughter too!

Another thing that I am doing in our new house to save money is hanging the laundry on the line to dry whenever the weather has been permissable. I'm thankful that I should be able to the rest of the season and summer now. I fell in love with this house first for having a clothesline in the back yard!
