WIP Wednesday 11/4/15

Well, it's been a long time since I've done a work in progress post.  Ever since my sewing cram session to finish 2 of the quilts that I put in the quilt show, I've just not done much sewing at all.
I hope to change that and be able to share each week again progress that I am making on projects.

This past weekend I attended a quilt retreat hosted by Cottonwood Quilts.
I loved it!  It's so nice to get away, socialize with other quilters, and just have hours and hours of sewing time.
I finished a fall wall hanging, which won't be pictured here, but will be added to my etsy once I get my shop back in order there.

I finally got to use the hand dyed fabrics by Vicki Welsh that I won in blog giveaway from So Scrappy, along with several of the hexagon flowers that I have made with the So Scrappy color challenge.

I pulled out a bag of black and white fabric that was given to me by a friend.  It's been hanging in my craft room for ages.  I had planned a string quilt, then I thought of doing a jelly roll style top, but in the end I decided to do a rail fence with some red thrown in here and there for a color pop.

And, I worked some on my hexagon quilt project.  You know, that never ending, or 10 year project.  I have over 200 hexagons done in my container, plus what you see here in my box.  I'm anxious to see just how large of a quilt these will make, but not anxious enough to work on it daily.

Make Garbage Great By Tom Szaky and Albe Zakes

Fully titled Make Garbage Great: The TerraCycle Family Guide to a Zero-Waste Lifestyle this book is AWESOME!

It's a large hardbound, 224 page, book.  You will find fascinating information, little-known facts, awesome graphics, and colorful images on every page.  This is in addition to the cool projects that are shown throughout.  Each project includes easy to read instructions and step-by-step photos.
For example, here are the pages for the project that I started with from the book:

While I am here, let me share a picture of one of the finished Food Wrapper Napkin Rings that I made.  These are cool, and lots of fun to make too.

So many other projects that I love in the book and hope to get a chance to make.  Just a few of those are:  Food Pouch Tote Bag, Tin Can Office Organizer, Window Picture Frame, and Eggshell Planter.

Make Garbage Great is set up into 8 chapters:
Plastics
Metals
Paper
Textiles
Glass
Wood
Rubber
Organics

Each chapter examines the material in our every day lives, offers a detailed time time of the substance, addresses the current state of affairs, contains a DIY section, talks about the future, and provides useful resources.  This in addition to lists of reuse ideas, quotes, interviews and more.

It will really open your eyes up to the importance of recycling and reusing plus give you some awesome ideas on things to Make Garbage Great.

I highly recommend it!

The Secret World of Debt Collection by Mike Cardoza

Let's talk about the author first:
Mike Cardoza is a former senior executive of a debt-buying company, a debt collection agency, and a major regional high-volume debt collection law firm.  A graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center, and UCLA with a degree in Business Economics, he is a veteran of the war in Iraq and continues to serve his country as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.  He founded The Cardoza Law Corporation in order to share the truth about consumer credit and finance with the people who need it most.  He lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Now let's talk about the book:

This little gem is only 62 pages, but this little gem is worth it's 'weight in gold' as they say.
If you, or anyone you know, are plagued by debt collectors, I highly recommend this book.  It's fully titled:
The Secret World of Debt Collection:Beat Collectors at Their Own Game –A Former Collections Executive Reveals How

We have our own problems with debt collectors here in our house, but at the time I received the book, my mother was being 'bamboozled' into paying some that she just couldn't afford to pay.  I read her several excerpts from the book, but finally gave her the book to read.  It finally gave her the 'backbone' she needed to stave them off and stop feeling timid and scared, and forced into paying them when she couldn't afford it.No, the book isn't about how to avoid paying bills that you owe.  It does give you insider tips, and confidence, on how to deal with the debt collectors.

Here is one bit of information from the book:
Keep Everything:  Debt Collectors, Debt Buyers, and Creditors run into real legal problems when they say one thing, but do another. Or promise to do something, but then fail to do it. Or just plain violate the law.

Action: Save Your Mail and Your Collection Voicemails.  Save everything you suspect to be a collection notice for at least a year. Save voicemails from Debt Collectors that are aggressive, rude, or which fail to clearly state that they are a communication from a debt collector.  If you’re getting repeated calls to your cell phone from collectors and you didn’t give express permission for them to dial your cell phone, answer those calls so that you can verify who is placing them and so that they will be recorded on your cell phone bill. If you did give consent, then write or call to revoke it - and then watch for subsequent calls. Keep a log of what collectors called from where and when and what they said.

Disclaimer: I was sent a copy of the book as well as additional information for the purpose of this review. I was not compensated in any other way, however, all opinions are my own. Post contains affiliate links.

Frugal Friday with Marsha--My Entries to the Quilt Show

MarshasSpot

You might be wondering what my quilt show entries and Frugal Friday have in common.
Well....if you know me then you know they do go together.
It's so very rare for me to buy anything new, and that includes fabric.
I pick up fabric at thrift shops, yard sales, estate sales, and several people "donate" fabric they aren't going to use, or don't want anymore to me.

I love making 'scrappy' quilts, so I am in heaven with my stash of fabrics.
I will tell a little bit about each picture.  I hope you enjoy. (and eventually some of these will be listed in my etsy shop)

This was a quilt top from about 1935 that I found in my mom's basement.  It' a signature quilt with church members names embroidered in it (most of them related to me).  I had a lady at church finish it for me to give my mom as a Christmas present.  She only charged me $30 to finish it.  It was in the bed turning part of the Heart of Kansas quilt show.

This is what I made for the quilt guild challenge.  I used only the fabrics they gave us to use for the front, which we paid $2.65 for.  I found the backing and batting in my stash.

This T-shirt dress was made from a pattern in a book that I received in for reviews.  The t-shirt was just in the girls' drawer and the patchwork on the bottom was part of some fabric that I paid $2 for the whole box of at an estate sale.  The lace was given to me by a lady at church.

My fractured pineapple quilt is the result of a workshop I took at the guild taught by David Duwe.
As far as classes go, this was a good one.  Only the $20 class fee was needed since nothing extra had to be bought and no special fabrics were needed.  It's made entirely from my stash of fabrics that have been given to me or that I bought second hand.

This is my Goodnight Irene quilt which was the result of a sew along with Terry's Treasures blog.  I did buy a charm pack for $5.77 from the Missouri Quilt Co. online, that is the cream colors.  The colorful squares come from a popcorn tin that was given to me full of 2 1/4 inch squares already cut.   The batting and backing fabric was given to me by a lady at church.

This mini log cabin quilt is also the result of a $20 workshop that I took at quilt guild. Again, no extra items to buy and it's made with scraps.  1 inch strips of fabric.   Again, fabrics from my stash.

And, my last entry for the quilt sho is this Rudolph story quilt.  The story book panel was given to me by a lady at church.  I cut it up and put the story into a child's quilt.  I worked with greens and reds from my stash for the sashing and borders.

I hope you enjoyed the 'show' and until next week....keep on being Frugal!

WIP Wedesday 8/19/15

August is slipping by fast.  Sewing and I are not finding much time together.  I really must figure out a way to change that.
I haven't worked any more on the hexagons, but will will at my Needlers group this afternoon.

Last Friday was sit n' sew at the quilt shop.  I just pulled a UFO bag off the wall and went.
It was half square triangles.  I was going to at least make a lap quilt, but change my mind to just use the squares that were done and make it in to a table runner instead.
I will just throw some batting in to the bag and work on it again next month at sit n' sew.

http://atomicmailer.com/splashpage.php?splashid=7&rid=37

Here's the post I promised the other day.  Atomic Mailer officially launches today at Noon EST!
I personally can't wait to get in and start sending my ads and start seeing the results and the money come in.
This is an ad they gave us to share with our readers and "customers", which I have edited to my own liking to highlight so many of the perks.

Again, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me through email at marsha.seiberling@gmail.com or message me on facebook.    If you've not given advertising through a mailer a try, I hope you will consider it....and with the added bonus of the ways to earn while in Atomic Mailer, this is a no lose situation for everyone!

P.S.  I highly recommend upgrading for higher earnings.  When you join you will see one time offers when logging in.  The first will be a discounted lifetime membership.  If you pass on that one it will offer you a 2 year upgrade.  Pass on that one and it keeps going until it gets to the discount on the monthly upgrade.
If you aren't sure, I recommend trying the monthly.  You may cancel after that first month if you decide it's not for you.
These offers truly only come once when first joining and you will not see these discounts again!
Loads of benefits being upgraded and you earn more and faster too.

WIP Wednesday 8/12/15

It's been a couple of weeks or so since I've done a WIP Wednesday post.
I intended to, then didn't 'get around to it'.

I did finish some things that are now moved to my finishes list.  I will do a post soon including the pictures of my entries into the Heart of Kansas quilt show.

All I have worked on lately are hexagons, and that was only while we were on our big family camping vacation trip.  I decided it was finally time to start putting them together and see just what I end up with with all of the hexies that I have to get made, and that I am already done with.
Hopefully there will be some progress to show you each week.
