Frugal Friday with Marsha -- Rug Making

As I have been working to attempt to make a penny rug, rugs, and making them is on my mind.

Some say that just  like quilting, rug making is a "lost art".  They are probably right, but I have a great time making them.

I started out years ago by crocheting them with that huge crochet hook.  I made them out of t-shirts that I cut in big rounds of strips.  We still use these around the house all these years later.  I even still have on of them listed in My Zibbet Shop.

I'm long done making rugs this way.  Some years back now a lady in our church taught us how to make toothbrush rugs.  One of the men of the church took our toothbrushes and fashioned them into the needles for us.

Here are a few that I have made.  Some of these have sold and some of them you will find in my Zibbet and in My Etsy Shop.

I still love making the toothbrush rugs and have bags of materials ready to make more in my craft room.

I took a class at the quilt shop on how to make a lockerhook rug.  So much fun!!  I have made 2 now.  One has sold and the other one is still in my Etsy shop.   I have one more to make this size, but I have bought more canvas and intend to make a runner rug!

I got an idea that I could make a latchhook rug with little strips of t-shirt.  This one is still a work in progress....and one that I need to get out to work on!

The only picture I have of the penny rug is the one I shared in my WIP Wednesday blog with my progress on cutting out the felt circles.   I do have those cut out now and in hopes that as soon as I am done with this post I will be pinning the circles to the blanket that I am using for the backing of the rug.  I will give a report on how it's coming along both here and in next Wednesday's post.

Other than buying the canvas for the lockerhook rugs and the string for making those, most all of my materials are "handed down" to me as others clean out their sewing rooms.....edges of fabrics that I've used for other projects, bought at yard sales and such.    In the "olden days", as I call them, all rugs and other things were made with scraps of worn clothing, blankets and such.  Sometimes I think I would have made a good pioneer woman......LOL

WIP Wednesday 4/16/14

Good Morning!

I think I have been pretty productive with my crafts this week.....but not so much anywhere else.

I took one evening and got out my cut up t-shirts and fabric strips etc.
I have them divided up to make rugs.
I know that in bags somewhere I have strips that I have yet to cut for rugs.....somewhere.....hhmmm.

Here is what I am working on now.  It's a rug with wider strips of t-shirts:

I finished up the set of 6 hexagon flowers.
They are now listed for sale as a set in my Etsy Shop.
I also worked on my items in the Online Craft Mall.   I updated items....took out a couple of things that I don't make anymore, and added a few things.  I added the hexagon flowers in sets of 6.  I will continue to work on the hexagon flowers here and there.  It will be years before I get them done  LOL

Last Friday evening was sit n' sew at the quilt shop.  
I took my Goodnight Irene blocks to work on.   I didn't get near as far as I thought I could!
I wanted to show a picture, just to 'prove' that I really am working on it.

I am behind.  I should be getting row 4 put on to the quilt this month.  I'm still building the blocks for rows 3 and 4.

Plus, I have added some things to the list since I made the list at the first of the year.

Maybe some day I will actually get it together.

WIP Wednesday 12/21/11--Project Line Up

Good Wednesday morning to all.
This feels like it's been such a strange week as far as my crafts.  You probably know how that is.  I had so many plans on what I wanted to get done, and the majority of it did not get done.
My main plans were to line up my projects in a row, getting materials ready for all of them.

Well......I have one more box to set up for starting on toothbrush rugs, but below is 3 of my boxes.  I have one to start in flannels, one with brighter colors of cotton and one with more neutral colors in cotton.  I still have to get my box ready for one with t-shirts.

I finished up a set of the hot pads and I have 2 or 3 more sets that I have materials cut for.   I still have the 2 simple table runners to get made.....the flowery quilt to finish the squares on......I have a plan for a string quilt if I have enough of a material that I need......I have fabric bags ready for sewing.    I had made myself a plan...I was going to start using up my yarn stash making double thick crocheted hotpads with matching plastic canvas coasters.   I got started on a yellow set.

I have a request by a nephew for a crocheted My Little Pony.  My daughter found me instructions and she bought the yarn with her Hobby lobby card.  Below is a picture of my progress so far.  I hope it comes out alright....I'm thinking the hair is going to be even harder than the pattern has been.   Wish me good on getting it finished as well please, just a few days left to complete it.

Squidoo Hopping 4/28/11

Good Thursday morning and welcome to this week's Squidoo Blog Hop.  I hope to see lots of you link in your squidoo related blog posts this week and keep me busy hopping around squidoo.

My Toothbrush Rugs--Last week a challenge was put out by one of the Rocket Mom's to build a lens about a craft for me.  Since generally we build lenses on crafts we've made as gifts, or crafts we make to sell, she wanted to see lenses about something we are making for ourselves.  I'd been wanting to build a lens about the toothbrush rugs I make, and since I am currently working on one to put in our basement, it was perfect timing.  It will updated along the way as my rug progresses.  This one is going to be large and take me awhile to complete.

This Day in History April 24-- I wanted to build this on my birthday but didn't get to it until the following day.  Another in my series of lenses.  For now I am building for dates that mean something to me.   Today is my son's birthday so a little later I will be doing today's history.

Looks like that is all I did this past week in squidoo.  Hopefully this week I can start getting caught up on my review type lenses as well as get a couple more of the history ones built.
